In many (agent-based) simulations the programmers purport to model elements of human society. These models are often based on the researchers' understanding of and focus on spe- ci c elements of this society. We suggest that using a frame- work that is used in social and political science (the Insti- tutional Analysis and Development framework) will greatly improve the design, comparison and validation of arti cial societies. We apply this approach dubbed MAIA to a pre- existing model of consumer lighting.
